Date rape drug detection.

Undercover Colors made headlines a few years ago for its idea to detect date rape drugs in alcohol using coloured nail varnish. Today that idea has transformed into SipChip, a lateral flow-based device that can detect beverages spiked with drugs (commonly called ‘roofies’) in 30 seconds. In this episode we speak to Undercover Colors’ Director of R&D Dr Nick Letourneau about SipChip and his company’s fight against drug-facilitated sexual assault.

Food allergy is a common and growing problem, placing burdens on health systems worldwide. Studies suggest that in some Western countries up to 10 per cent of children have a food allergy. Lateral flow technology offers one solution, allowing food to be tested for allergens with rapid results. Targeting Cancer Cells with Gold Nanorods.

This week our special guest is Zoe Pikramenou, Professor of Inorganic Chemistry and Photophysics at the University of Birmingham in the UK.

Over the last year Sona has been working with Prof. Pikramenou and her team on a joint project to develop next generation gold nanorods for tissue imaging. The ultimate aim of the project is to investigate whether gold nanorods can be used to target cancer cells in the human body.

Rare disease diagnostics.

This week our guest is Adam Griffiths, Conference Director of the Rare Disease Diagnostics Summit being held in Boston MA this September. Startistics show that more than 350 million people globally are living with a rare disease. On average it takes seven different consultations before an initial referral to a clinical geneticist and a minimum of five years to completely diagnose a patient, with 70-90% of cases going undiagnosed. We talk to Adam about rare diseases and how to alleviate the diagnostic burden for patients.
